Field & Garden: Autumn

  • Dig carrots and parsnips after the first hard frost; they keep sweeter.
  • Plant seed garlic by the end of October, pointed end up, a hand's width apart.
  • Drain outside faucets and bring in hoses before November.
  • Bank the north side of the house with leaves or hay before the cold sets in.
  • Mark the edges of driveways and walks for the plow crews by the middle of November.

A gray November is still November, and the woodpile doesn't care.
